2009 Report
REGION 1 (Sec. Ian Wood)
Winners of 2009 Region 1 Final : Cheshire A Team
Fishing Brenig for a second day little had changed, the wind direction being almost identical but maybe a little stronger, with more of a wave on the water. Being the Regional Qualifier we should have been fishing against Merseyside but unfortunately they could not provide a team. However we were lucky to have Neil Carey attending from Merseyside. So basically it was the Cheshire A team v B team, one or two people from the B team were asking where Dave Allen was!!!!! After the draw we got ready to fish, and I tackled up with Orange blob on the point , a small white blob on the top dropper, and Black and Green Fritz on middle dropper, on a Di 3 line. Drawn with Anton I could see he had two orange blobs, Anton took the engine and we set off to the buoys at the edge of the cages on the bank side. Anton cast retrieved cast again and was into a fish. I thought it had water skis on with the speed Anton got it into the boat. To cut a short story shorter by 10.30am Anton had three fish in the boat, then things went a little slow but he continued to catch and by 11.30am had bagged up, and I hadn't had a pull. I had changed to what Anton was doing still no joy, we moved round the same area but still no joy. Anton even gave me his rod which was still tackled up with his flies, still no joy. By this time several of the boats had bagged up and were all giving me advice where Llyn Brenig was stuffed with fish, but try as I might I could not touch the fish. Knowing where we had caught yesterday we moved and I changed tackle to an intermediate line with two Black and Green fritz lures. So at the Woods drifting into the Quarry I caught my first fish, we repeated the drift but could not catch another fish, so we decided to fish onto the dam wall just above the Tower here I caught my second fish, we repeated the drift more towards the mound but as we moved away from the Tower the takes were less and less, so we repeated the drifts and I managed to catch my bag on the trusted Black and green Fritz lures. The most productive patterns were Orange Blobs stripped through the water and on an intermediate line. However Chris Webster caught his six fish faster than anyone bagging up by 11.10am, using a Di 5, which included two good fish one weighing in at 4lbs and the second a little less, caught in front of the cages drifting away from the dam wall.

Team A qualify for the National Event, with Chris Webster and Mike Wellman the Individuals.
As you can see both Mike and Tom had the same total weight. I have clarified the rules and they go as follows:
Competition results will be decided by the bag-weight of the fish, the higher weight taking precedence. If weights are equal, the greater number of trout will prevail. If there is still a tie, the heaviest individual fish will take precedence. The organiser and the water authority will agree a bag limit per individual. When a competitor reaches that limit, the time is to be recorded by agreement with the boatman and/or boat partner. A time-bonus weight, set by the organiser, will be added to the angler's catch for every full quarter of an hour remaining in the competition.
So Mike Wellman is selected because he had the heaviest bag of fish.
This years Regional Championship match will be at Brenig Reservoir on Friday the 11th June. The event will involve Greater Manchester Police this year with a new section evolving from this force under the guidance of its new secretary Chris Brook, we can only hope that Merseyside will at some come back into the fold.
