The first TRI – Match took place at Llandegfedd Reservoir on the 26th April. The Tri-Match is an event introduced to provide a competition between the British Police team, the newly formed and developing Prison Service team as well as a well-established Navy team. The match that was introduced by the Secretaries of the above Sections as they sought to enhance the skills of their respective anglers, in order challenge the stronger fly fishing teams involved in the Services Championships in June.

The match also provided an opportunity for members of the British Police team to get to know one and other and cast a line before the June event. To ensure the match secured some funding from Police Sport UK an element of community involvement was introduced. Local anglers from fishing clubs based near the water were invited to attend and participate. To keep the three service teams on their toes, four anglers from the local team were Welsh Internationalist, who attended and gave of their best.

A separate competition was run on the day between the Police and Prison Service. A challenge match to win the Custody Growler, a small trophy but much sought after by both teams.

The practice day on the Monday produce a number of fish on a number of different methods. However, National Secretary Calum Fraser had an excellent bag of fish, fishing a DI 3 line, with a Sunburst Fab on the point, two buzzers in middle and a small black cormorant on the top dropper using a very slow figure of eight retrieve.

I might add he had an even better day during the competition, catching the biggest fish a Rainbow of just over 3lb, which had a Lamprey attached to its side…but he wasn’t in the competition so enough said. (The Lamprey was returned to the water alive being a protected species’….but horrible).

The weather was bright, sunny and very windy, which on match eased a little as the day went on.

The Navy won the Tri- Match pipping the police team by a few ounces, with the Prison Service third/fourth. The Welsh select team, a group of six very good anglers gave a fine performance with top overall rod going to Kieran Jenkins a Welsh Youth Internationalist who had fourteen fish on the day. Keith Anderson was the top police rod with twelve fish.
