International 2010 Mentieth

Home International Champiomships:

Lake of Menteith 9th September

The Home International Championships returned to Scotland and the hosts set out to win the Charles Landell Trophy for a historic fifth year. Well Scottish Police Angling Association can look back at their preparation for this event and over the year with considerable satisfaction. At the Lake of Menteith the Scots anglers were crowned champions for the fifth year in a row by winning the match.

The method the Scots adopted was to fish small dries; one fly in particular a fiery brown dry fly, with orange legs that imitated a beetle that had been present on the water for the previous couple of week proved extremely effective.  Although not all Scots had a roaring success with this fly, their top rod Alan Hill from Strathclyde Police certainly did, producing a magnificent bag of fish. Alan’s three despatched trout, weighed 7lb 08oz he also had a bonus 18lb (9 returned), winning the Cambridgeshire Cup (Best Individual). Another Scot, in second place, followed him: Stevie Bett from Fife who had three fish for 5lb 11oz receiving a similar bonus of 18lb (9 returned).

The Hampshire Cup for the best bag without bonus went to Alan Donnelly from Strathclyde Police who had three fish for 8lb.
Gary Smith from Northern Ireland collected the Gwilym Hughes as best placed angler for the National (2nd) and International Championships (5th).

The Derrick Scougal Trophy was shared by Kenny Hall (Scotland) & Aaron Fawcett (N.Ireland) both with a Rainbow weighing 3lb 05oz
The Home International was organised by John Friel (Scottish Sec.), again John proved himself to be a terrific organiser, the event ran very smoothly indeed. The accommodation, food and of course the fishing were all praised by competitors that attended and I subsequently received several email from anglers wishing to relay thanks to him through me.

So John a big thanks from me. I now look forward to working with you again for the 2012 National Championships, which you agreed to hold at the Lake.

“Oscar Evans Wooden Spoon” well it went to Wales, again this year. Sadly, on the morning of the competition as anglers gathered for the briefing at the Lake, they were asked to give a minutes silence in respect of Oscar who died earlier in the year after a long fight against cancer.
