22ND NATIONAL FLY FISHING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Anglers from all over the country converged on Llandegfedd Reservoir on Thursday the 2nd of June 2005 for the Police Sport UK National Fly Fishing Championship 2005.
After an extremely difficult (for some) and sodden practice day on the Reservoir, the previous day. It was refreshing to see how quickly the anglers resolve returned, as they tackled up and selected flies that would definitely lure fish into their boat and make them Champions of Champions.
The day began overcast, with a gentle breeze coming out from the south-west. “Perfect” & “There’s another rise” two comments heard as Brian Willams (Vice Chair) from an elevated position briefed the anglers prior the competition commencing. Malcolm Naylor (Sec. No. 2 Region: North -East) looking intently on.

The competition started at 9.30am, the competitors quickly dispersed over the water, the vast majority heading to the north end of the Reservoir, some fishing along and east shoreline on route. While few boats headed to the dam wall and the bay adjacent to the pier.
Fishing proved difficult during the day with a few fish coming to black or red buzzers, but the majority of fish were caught on a wide variety of flies and lines. It was interesting to hear some anglers had seen a considerable number of fish moving on the surface and had changed to floating lines, whilst others had seen nothing and struggled all day to attract a fish to their flies.
Steve Evans (Sec. No.7 Region: South West) into his second of five fish. Steve went onto win the Officials Trophy with five fish for 10lb 04oz.
Steve concentrated his fishing from the dam wall taking shorts drifts towards the pier where the boats had departed from.
Although he stated no method seemed to work better than another, the killer fly remains a closely guarded secret.
